After more than 70 years of existence, the brand of super cars is not done wowing its fans. Always looking for innovations and ever more performance, the prestigious German brand strives to remain true to what it represents at its core: its quintessential silhouettes are recognizable at first glance. After the Cayenne launched in 2002 and was revamped in 2010, the manufacturer did it again in 2014 and is offering a new SUV to its range.
The German SUV gets a new look in 2019 and returns in a version restyled for the occasion. The designers did not wish to disturb the vehicle’s original design and made only a few overall changes. Redesigned air intakes at the front, an integrated lighted strip at the rear or even the standard Full LED headlights are the most noticeable modifications.
As for the performance, this elevated sports car develops 245 horsepower in its standard version, with its 4-cylinder 2-litre engine, which allows it to go 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. For a weight of nearly 2 tons, this is quite formidable. With a 7-speed PDK, 21-inch wheels (optional) and 3 driving modes (Comfort and two Sport modes), the vehicle offers impressive manoeuvrability, handling and comfort. It combines the sensations and performance of a sports car, with a robust and sturdy chassis that undoubtedly offers reassuring security.
The only notable downside to this vehicle, which perfectly fulfils its role of a powerful and reliable car, is that lovers of roaring engines will remain somewhat let down. Indeed, the standard version and even the S version equipped with a 354-horsepower V6, or more than 100 additional horsepower, are disappointing in their sound - which could be more pronounced. This was the preference of the manufacturer, who is targeting a more family-oriented client demographic. However, all is relative, since this lack of character is only superficial, and this fast, robust and powerful hot-rod successfully fulfils its main mission.
The Macan builds upon the foundations of the Audi Q5 and is slightly smaller than its predecessor, the Cayenne. This beautiful toy simultaneously combines sportiness, design, practicality, and will be a superb addition to Porsche’s offerings.
It may be interesting to draw a parallel with the older generation and remember that the Macan had 5 variations: the standard, the S version, the S Diesel, GTS and Turbo. This vehicle, with all of its confusing variations, was a great success and in 2015 even went on to become the brand’s best-selling vehicle. As for the 2019 version, it has returned to offer a range with only gasoline-based engines, after the setbacks experienced by diesel and its polluting emissions.
Porsche has also won the bet on rolling out a vehicle whose proven reliability is perfect for long-distance journeys. In addition, the 5 seats allow it to easily assume the role of a family vehicle.
The quality of the finishes is reflected on the exterior but also the interior of the car, with high-end materials such as leather or Alcantara, an expanded 10.9'' technology screen and all the options (compass display, rear-view camera, blind spot assistance, BOSE sound system, etc.) expected from a top-of-the-line vehicle of this calibre. One may likewise notice a number of impressive buttons that each correspond to a feature and leave the impression of being inside the cockpit of an airplane.
Finally, the compact size of the Porsche Macan makes this exclusive vehicle a very good compromise versus the Cayenne, for those who desire a vehicle that is smaller, but just as powerful, robust and manoeuvrable.
